About us

CIEMAR is running from 1990 at Sines as an inter-department unit of the University of Évora, in the School of Sciences and Tecnology since 2015.

Currently, the main area of CIEMAR’s scientific research is marine biology and ecology, namely coastal ecology, biology and conservation of marine resources, and marine pollution. Funding has been obtained in national and international research projects, as well as in PhD programmes. CIEMAR researchers are members of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre.

Services have been provided for the assessment and monitoring of marine environments quality, namely in the Port of Sines.

Scientific and logistic support has been given to undergraduate and postgraduate courses of the University of Évora and other universities, Portuguese or not, as well as to teachers training courses. Classes have been taught every semester in the above mentioned scientific areas, as well as in other areas of biological and geological sciences.

Outreach activities have been frequently made in marine biology and ecology issues, disseminating research findings, and several scientific conferences were organized at the national or international level.

Running at Sines with the collaboration of the Town Hall of Sines, CIEMAR has equipment for lab and field work (e.g. microscopes, physicochemical probes, photo and video cameras, free and scuba diving equipment, jeep and boat), as well as temporary accommodation facilities.
